Why Hardwood?

Hardwood is denser than softwood, and therefore has a higher heat content or calorific value. Typically, the heat content of softwood is little more than half as much as hardwood by volume.

  • Typical heat content of hardwood 2300kWh/m3 (stacked)
  • Typical heat content of softwood 1300kWh/m3 (stacked)

Broadly speaking, around twice as many softwood logs may be required to achieve the same heat output as hardwood logs, so more frequent re-fuelling will be necessary when burning softwood.

Solid Fuel Association,
Guide to wood and multifuel

At Bryn Mawr Farm we pride ourselves on the high standard of our logs. Fuel quality is a vitally important consideration for anyone operating a wood burning stove or open fire; poor quality fuel is one of the main causes of faults, chimney fires, air quality issues and breakdowns.

We are registered on the Biomass Suppliers List (BSL), as a registered supplier of biomass wood fuel that meets the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) requirements, and are currently applying for certification for the Hetas approved Woodsure scheme, as a recognised supplier of Quality Assured Fuel.
